The Kano State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party has described the recent defections of Governors Peter Mbah of Enugu State and Douye Diri of Bayelsa State to the ruling All Progressives Congress as a welcome development and a relief for the party.
Speaking on the matter, the state chairman of the PDP, Yusif Kibiya, said the party is not surprised by their departure, insisting that it holds no electoral significance and would not impact future election outcomes.
“It’s not a shocker. All of them, we knew they were going. Anybody in PDP knows. We know that. It’s not a shocker,” Kibiya stated.
He accused the defecting governors of political compromise, claiming that their moves were driven by personal gain and alleged pressure from the central government.
“We are glad they are gone. Because you can’t deal with people with double-edged swords. These people are compromised,” he said. “They are thinking they are getting some pay; all these things, by the central government. And some were threatened. It’s very clear. So it’s nothing new with PDP. We all know.”
Kibiya further alleged that the Federal Government is orchestrating a plan to weaken the PDP and push the country toward a one-party system, a move he warned is detrimental to Nigeria’s democratic future.
