Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has ordered his commissioners to always wear a cap with President Bola Tinubu’s insignia, warning that he will not forgive any appointee who disobeys the directive.
The governor gave the warning on Tuesday while swearing in new commissioners and inaugurating boards and agencies in Benin City, the state capital.
Okpebholo, who openly credited Tinubu for his rise to power, said his emergence as governor “might not have been possible” without the president’s support.
“This could not have happened if we did not have a responsible president. We have done many elections here, and the major problem we had was that the president was not with us. But today we say thank you,” he said.
“I will not forgive any commissioner that is not wearing this cap. In our exco meetings, if you are not wearing a suit and you come without this Asiwaju cap, you will go back,” the governor added.
The insignia, famously worn by President Tinubu for decades, has become a trademark symbol among his supporters, who often display it on caps and outfits.
Okpebholo urged the commissioners to see their positions as a call to serve, not an avenue for personal gain.
“You have been carefully screened and confirmed by the State House of Assembly purely on merit. Your nominations did not come as a reward or patronage but as a call to serve the people of Edo State,” he said.
He also warned against corruption, saying his administration would only focus on practical governance that delivers results.
“Your appointment is not for money-making but for service, sacrifice, and a better life for Edo people. This government has zero tolerance for corruption. You must show discipline, teamwork, and loyalty to the people,” Okpebholo said.
The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), was among the dignitaries who attended the swearing-in ceremony.
