Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party, a development that signals a significant shift in the state’s political landscape.

The announcement was confirmed through a Facebook post by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Daniel Alabrah. According to the statement, the resignation was not limited to Governor Diri alone; the Speaker of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Abraham Ingobere, along with all PDP members in the state legislature, also stepped down from the party.

Governor Diri’s departure puts an end to months of speculation surrounding his alleged plans to leave the PDP for the All Progressives Congress (APC). However, Alabrah did not indicate which political party the governor intends to join, leaving Diri’s next move open to speculation.

Sources within Government House in Yenagoa revealed to The Punch that the resignation was disclosed during the State Executive Council meeting held on Wednesday. It was further gathered that the governor has already submitted his resignation letter to the PDP leadership.

Reports also indicate that other members of the State Executive Council have tendered their resignations in solidarity with the governor.

When contacted, Alabrah declined to offer additional comments, stating, “I cannot talk now.” Attempts to reach the Bayelsa State PDP Chairman, Mr. Solomon Agwanana, were unsuccessful, as phone calls to him went unanswered.

Governor Diri’s resignation follows closely on the heels of reports that Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, has also defected to the APC, suggesting an emerging wave of political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
