The Super Eagles of Nigeria on Monday crushed the Cheetahs of Benin Republic 4-0 in a decisive 2026 World Cup qualifier at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo.
Nigeria’s top striker, Victor Osimhen, scored a brilliant hat-trick before substitute Frank Onyeka added the fourth goal late in the game to seal a convincing win.
Although the result boosted Nigeria’s hope, it was not enough to secure a World Cup ticket as group leaders South Africa defeated Rwanda 3-0 to confirm their qualification for the 2026 tournament, which will be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Nigeria made four changes to the side that beat Lesotho, with Wilfred Ndidi wearing the captain’s armband. Moses Simon marked his 85th international appearance, while Osimhen started upfront alongside Akor Adams.
Super Eagles starting XI: Stanley Nwabali (GK), Benjamin Fredrick, Zaidu Sanusi, Wilfred Ndidi (C), Semi Ajayi, Victor Osimhen, Samuel Chukwueze, Moses Simon, Alex Iwobi, Akor Adams, Calvin Bassey.
Substitutes: Adebayo, Ekong, Arokodare, Onyeka, Onyemaechi, Abdullahi, Obasogie, Uche, Moffi, Olusegun.
Osimhen opened the scoring in the third minute after connecting with a sharp assist from Samuel Chukwueze. Benin tried to equalise in the 12th minute but were stopped by a strong defensive play from Calvin Bassey.
The Napoli forward doubled Nigeria’s lead in the 38th minute, again from Chukwueze’s perfect cross.
Benin started the second half with renewed pressure, but Osimhen struck again in the 51st minute to complete his hat-trick and extend Nigeria’s lead to 3-0.
Frank Onyeka, who came off the bench, sealed the victory with a clean finish in the 90th minute, leaving Benin’s goalkeeper helpless.
Despite not clinching a World Cup ticket, the result lifted the team’s spirit and kept hopes alive for future competitions.
Osimhen’s dominant display earned him praise from fans, who took to social media to celebrate his effort.
Chukwueze commented after the game, “We came here to fight, and we gave everything. Victor was unbelievable today.”
With the win, Nigeria wrapped up their campaign on a high note, showcasing attacking strength and teamwork that fans have long hoped to see.
