The Swedish Football Association has dismissed head coach Jon Dahl Tomasson following a string of poor results in the 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign.
The announcement was made on Tuesday, with the FA stating that the decision, which takes effect immediately, was due to “a lack of results in the World Cup qualifiers.”
“There is still a chance to make the playoffs in March, and our responsibility is to ensure that we have the best possible conditions for reaching the World Cup finals,” said Simon Astrom, president of the Swedish FA.
Sweden’s latest defeat came on Monday when they lost 1-0 to Kosovo in Gothenburg, with Hoffenheim forward Fisnik Asllani scoring the only goal of the match.
Despite fielding top forwards like Viktor Gyokeres of Arsenal and Liverpool’s Alexander Isak, Sweden have failed to score in their last three matches and now sit bottom of Group B.
Tomasson, a former Denmark international who played for AC Milan, Feyenoord, and Newcastle, was appointed in February 2024.
The Swedish FA confirmed that the search for a new head coach “will begin immediately.”
