The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission has filed charges against a self-proclaimed journalist, Alkazim Kabir, also known as Abbati Kabiru Abuwa, for allegedly defrauding several people of about ₦14 million.

The anti-graft agency said Kabir, who is based in Kano, faces multiple charges bordering on fraud, impersonation, and obtaining money under false pretence.

Demola Bakare, Director of Public Enlightenment and Education at the ICPC, said in a statement that the case followed several petitions accusing Kabir of posing as top government officials to deceive his victims.

“Investigations by the Commission revealed that the suspect had impersonated several public figures, including aides to the President and Vice President, as well as members of the National Assembly, to defraud unsuspecting individuals,” Bakare said.

He explained that in one of the incidents, Kabir allegedly obtained $3,300 and 1,620 Saudi Riyals from two people while pretending to be an aide to top government officials.

Bakare added that the suspect often took advantage of opportunities related to international religious travels to swindle people.

“During a trip to Mecca, Saudi Arabia, he reportedly borrowed 11,000 Saudi Riyals from a fellow traveler and later sent a fake bank receipt as proof of repayment,” he said.

The Commission also found that Kabir allegedly issued a forged transfer receipt of ₦3.2 million to a travel agent who had helped him arrange flight, hotel, and train bookings.

Bakare said the Commission had concluded its investigation and filed charges against Kabir.

“Charges have been filed against the suspect, and he will soon be arraigned before a competent court as soon as the case is assigned,” he added.
