Afrobeats singer Spyro has opened up about how his father’s constant criticism during childhood made him develop a deep fear of failure.
In a candid interview with media personality Frank Edoho, Spyro said his father’s negative words made him believe he would never succeed.
“I thought I was going to die broke. I always had this fear of failure. And my dad contributed to that. He took every opportunity he got to always tell me that I am a failure, so I had the fear of failure because I had internalized it,” the singer recalled.
Spyro explained that the fear affected his confidence and school performance, leading to poor grades in secondary school. He said the mindset was so strong that he even doubted he could finish his university education.
According to him, his turning point came when he developed a personal relationship with God, which helped him overcome the fear that had followed him since childhood.
Before his music breakthrough, Spyro revealed he had considered quitting and had started a career in interior design. His fortunes changed when his 2022 single “Who Is Your Guy” went viral, followed by a 2023 remix featuring Tiwa Savage.
The remix not only brought him widespread fame but also earned him the Best Collaboration award at the 16th Headies.
Spyro said his journey has taught him that faith and self-belief can break the cycle of fear and doubt built from past experiences.
