The Rivers State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees has suspended its planned strike after a closed-door meeting with Governor Siminalayi Fubara at the Government House in Port Harcourt on Tuesday.

The strike, which was expected to begin at midnight, followed a dispute in Emohua Local Government Area, where council chairman Chidi Lloyd had withheld the salaries of some workers he claimed were not duly employed staff of the council.

At the meeting, attended by NULGE leaders, members of the Local Government Service Commission, and Chidi Lloyd, an agreement was reached, though details of the resolution were not made public.

The dispute had earlier led to protests, with workers blocking the entrance to the Emohua council secretariat and barricading parts of the East–West Road.

Speaking with reporters after the meeting, Rivers NULGE president Clifford Paul confirmed the suspension of the strike. He said workers’ concerns would be addressed in line with the outcome of the talks.

Chairman of the Rivers Local Government Service Commission, Israel Amadi, described the talks as “fruitful” and praised Governor Fubara for his intervention.

Also, Emohua LGA chairman Chidi Lloyd commended the governor for what he called a transparent and decisive step in resolving the matter.
