Cooking gas price dropped by 21% in August – NBS

The National Bureau of Statistics has reported a sharp drop in the cost of Liquefied Petroleum Gas, popularly known as cooking gas, across Nigeria.

According to the NBS Liquefied Petroleum Gas (Cooking Gas) Price Watch for August 2025, the average retail price for refilling a 12.5kg cylinder fell by 21.42 percent to N16,195.07 from N20,609.48 in July.

However, the report noted that the August figure still showed a 4.13 per cent increase when compared to N15,552.56 recorded in August 2024.

State-by-state analysis showed that Yobe recorded the highest average price for a 12.5kg cylinder at N16,887.42. Adamawa followed closely with N16,872.40, while Ebonyi residents paid an average of N16,859.17.

On the other hand, Benue recorded the lowest price at N15,102.50, with Borno and Imo states also among the cheapest at N15,176.39 and N15,177.58, respectively.

A zonal breakdown showed that the North-West recorded the highest average retail price for refilling a 12.5kg cylinder at N16,358.15, followed by the South-East at N16,344.61. The South-West had the lowest average at N15,865.17.

The NBS report also showed a significant drop in the price of smaller cylinders. The average retail price for refilling a 5kg cylinder decreased by 22.32 per cent month-on-month, from N8,243.79 in July to N6,404.02 in August. Year-on-year, however, the price fell slightly by 0.40 per cent from N6,430.02 in August 2024.

For 5kg cylinders, Katsina recorded the highest average price at N6,945.21, followed by Taraba with N6,893.12 and Rivers with N6,886.49. Delta had the lowest price at N5,657.50, while Bauchi and Borno followed with N5,721.75 and N6,070.56 respectively.

The latest figures come as Nigerians continue to struggle with rising living costs, with analysts warning that energy prices remain a key driver of household expenses.
