Nigerian singer Mr May D has found support from DJ Neptune after a social media user mocked him for performing at a small street event in Lagos.
The online user had written on X, “For May D mind he dey perform for 02 Arena. Sold out!” The comment quickly spread online, sparking debate about how entertainers are treated when their careers slow down.
Reacting, DJ Neptune defended the singer, stressing that people should respect artistes working hard with their gifts instead of mocking them.
He wrote, “Sigh! Your fellow man is hustling legally for his daily bread with his God-given talent, and this is what you have to say? Everything shouldn’t be for cruise. E red today, no mean say e no go green tomorrow. SMH.”
Mr May D, born Akinmayokun Awodumila, rose to fame in 2011 after signing with Square Records, the label owned by P-Square. His songs like “Soundtrack,” “Ile Ijo,” and “Gat Me High” made him one of the hottest new acts at the time.
But his journey changed in 2012 when he left Square Records after a fallout with P-Square. He later claimed that the split hurt his career, accusing the duo of blocking opportunities and failing to pay royalties.
In past interviews, May D has said that before the split, his fame was on the same level as stars like Wizkid and Davido. He believes his international rise was cut short because of the fallout.
Since then, the singer has struggled to remain in the spotlight. Recently, videos of him performing at street shows have drawn mixed reactions from Nigerians. While some sympathized with his struggles, others mocked him for how far he seemed to have fallen.
One of his supporters, a retiree who attended his recent street show, said, “People forget that May D gave us hit after hit. He is still talented, and not everyone can be at the top forever.”
For now, May D continues to perform in smaller venues, with fans divided between nostalgia for his past success and criticism of his current reality.
