Tragedy struck in Plateau State after a mob mistakenly lynched a police officer during an investigation in Bassa Local Government Area.
The victim, identified as Inspector Lasare Jeremiah of the Plateau State Police Command, was attacked on Thursday, September 10, 2025, at Nyakala Village.
Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Alfred Alabo, confirmed the development in a statement on Friday, explaining that detectives from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) had been following up on a petition against one Adu Abdullahi, a resident of Kishika Village.
“On the said date, SCID detectives spotted the suspect riding a motorcycle along Binchi Village and trailed him to Nyakala Village, where he was intercepted,” Alabo said.
According to him, Abdullahi immediately raised a false alarm, shouting that the officers were motorcycle thieves. The claim triggered a mob attack on one of the officers, Inspector Jeremiah.
“When the mob realized their mistake, they turned on the suspect, attacking him aggressively,” Alabo explained.
Both men were rushed to Cottage Hospital in Kisalloi, Bassa. Inspector Jeremiah died while receiving treatment, while the suspect was later referred to Jos University Teaching Hospital, where he also passed away.
The Police Command said the State CID in Jos has opened an investigation into the matter.
Commissioner of Police, Emmanuel Olugbemiga Adesina, described the killing as deeply painful and cautioned residents against jungle justice.
“He assures that the perpetrators will be prosecuted in accordance with the law once arrested,” Alabo added.
