A violent mob attack on the Garko Police Division in Kano State has left one person dead and several injured, including three police officers.
The incident happened on Friday, September 5, after officers from Wudil Area Command arrested three suspects over the killing of a resident in the Wudil area. The suspects were taken to the Garko Police Division for further questioning.
According to a statement by the Kano State Police Command on Saturday, youths armed with sticks and stones stormed the station, demanding to lynch the suspects.
“The mob violently attacked the Division, disrupting police activities with the intent to lynch the arrested suspects,” the statement read.
During the chaos, police said a divisional patrol vehicle was set ablaze, while three vehicles belonging to Hisbah and Garko Local Government were destroyed. Windows of the police building were also shattered.
The statement added, “Three police personnel sustained injuries and were rushed to Wudil Hospital, where they are responding to treatment. Tragically, during the chaos, a burning tyre burst and struck one of the frontline attackers, leading to his death, and three others sustained injuries.”
Police further confirmed that nine suspects linked to the mob action have been arrested, while efforts are ongoing to track others involved.
The Commissioner of Police ordered a swift containment operation and engaged local stakeholders, which the command said helped to restore calm to the area.
