American streamer Kai Cenat has renewed his promise to build a school in Lagos after facing questions from fans about the long-awaited project.
Cenat first visited Nigeria in March 2024, where he toured the Makoko Children Development Foundation School and Orphanage. The sight of children learning in cramped, unstable classrooms pushed him to pledge support. “After what I saw in Makoko, I knew I had to help,” he said during his recent Mafiathon 3 livestream.
The streamer had initially announced a $1 million plan, but fresh updates now put the project at $5 million. “From land purchase and approvals to construction, staffing, and curriculum. There’s a great deal involved,” Cenat explained.
Representatives working with him, including Fanny Moral of Enko Education and Nigerian lawyer Chinedum Umeche of Banwo & Ighodalo, stressed that building a lasting school cannot happen overnight. “It’s impossible to complete such a project in under two years,” they said while appearing on the livestream.
The project, which was meant to be in Makoko, has been moved to Yaba, Lagos, because of building challenges in the waterfront community. Still, Cenat promised children from Makoko will attend for free.
To fund the work, 15 percent of revenue from Mafiathon 3 will go directly to the school. Cenat told fans that if he hits his goal of one million Twitch subscribers, it could generate about $750,000. Current donations already stand at $1.1 million, with Cenat personally contributing more than $128,000 to buy computers for the old Makoko school.
The Kai Cenat Foundation Inc. has now been set up to handle all funds. “This school is bigger than me, bigger than streaming. We want it to last for generations,” Cenat said.
