Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah has set a new record by becoming the first player to win the Professional Footballers’ Association Player of the Year award three times.

Salah, who had previously won in 2018 and 2022, picked up the 2025 award on Tuesday night in Manchester after a season where he scored 29 goals to help Liverpool win the Premier League title. He beat Alexis Mac Allister, Cole Palmer, Bruno Fernandes, Declan Rice and Alexander Isak to the prize.

The Egypt international said the win was a proud moment for him and for his country.

“I look at myself now, a guy coming from Egypt and making it to the top level, making history today, it’s something that makes me so proud,” Salah said while receiving his award.

Salah’s latest achievement means he has moved ahead of football greats like Cristiano Ronaldo, Thierry Henry and Gareth Bale, who all won the award twice in their careers.

On the opening day of the new season, the 33-year-old scored in Liverpool’s 4-2 win against Bournemouth, taking his Premier League tally to 187 goals. That placed him in joint fourth on the all-time scoring list, level with Andy Cole.

Despite the victory and a busy transfer summer, Salah admitted Liverpool’s future still holds challenges, especially after the tragic passing of teammate Diogo Jota.

“You’re signing very good talent and also we let some great players leave and you also know what happened with one of our teammates,” Salah said. “So you need to give your experience to the new players because they’ve never played for Liverpool and playing for Liverpool is not easy at all… it’s a huge pressure for the young players. Virgil \[van Dijk], me and all the guys in the team try to give them the experience to help them.”

Elsewhere, Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers was named PFA Young Player of the Year, the club’s first winner since James Milner in 2010. He won ahead of Liam Delap, Myles Lewis-Skelly, Ethan Nwaneri, Milos Kerkez and Dean Huijsen.

Liverpool also dominated the PFA Team of the Year with Salah, Mac Allister, Van Dijk and Ryan Gravenberch all included, while Manchester City had no players named for the first time since 2017.

Salah now stands alone in PFA history, leaving behind Ronaldo, Henry, Bale, Kevin De Bruyne, Alan Shearer and Mark Hughes, who each lifted the award twice.
