Iran has executed a man accused of passing classified intelligence to Israel’s Mossad agency, including details about a nuclear scientist killed during the recent 12-day conflict between the two countries in June.
The announcement was made on Wednesday by the Iranian judiciary.
According to Mizan Online, the judiciary’s official news outlet, “Roozbeh Vadi… was executed following judicial proceedings and confirmation of his sentence by the Supreme Court,” adding that the intelligence he leaked pertained to “a nuclear scientist who was assassinated during the Zionist regime’s recent aggression.”
The execution was carried out by hanging, though the report did not specify the date of Vadi’s arrest or sentencing.
The judiciary stated that Vadi was recruited by Israel’s intelligence agency, Mossad, through online contact before he relayed “classified information.”
The execution comes weeks after hostilities between Iran and Israel erupted into open warfare in mid-June. Israel’s bombing campaign, described by Iranian officials as unprecedented, led to significant casualties and widespread damage. Iran retaliated with a barrage of missile and drone strikes.
Reports from Iranian media indicated that several high-ranking military officials, nuclear scientists, and hundreds of civilians were killed during the Israeli attacks, which targeted both strategic facilities and residential zones. More than a dozen nuclear scientists were reportedly among the dead.
In the aftermath, Iranian authorities pledged swift legal action against anyone suspected of espionage or collaboration with Israeli intelligence services. Since then, the country has announced several arrests and executions related to alleged ties with Mossad.
Iran remains one of the world’s top enforcers of capital punishment. According to human rights organizations including Amnesty International, the country ranks second globally in the number of executions, following China.
