An oil-drilling barge sank in the Gulf of Suez, resulting in the deaths of at least four crew members and leaving four others unaccounted for, according to Egyptian authorities.

The incident occurred on Tuesday night when the vessel, identified as Adam Marine 12, capsized in the Gebel el-Zeit region.

Egyptian officials confirmed that 22 individuals sustained injuries during the event.

According to Al Jazeera, citing Egyptian media reports, the barge was being towed to a different location when it sank.

Egypt’s Ministry of Health stated that four of the injured were airlifted to a hospital, while 18 others were transported by ambulance for treatment.

On Wednesday, the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources released images of Petroleum Minister Karim Badawi visiting survivors at El Gouna Hospital in Hurghada. He was accompanied by Labour Minister Mohammed Jibran and Red Sea Governor Amr Hanafi.

Hanafi noted that vessels from the Egyptian navy were deployed to assist in the ongoing search-and-rescue efforts for the missing crew members.

The Gebel el-Zeit area, located approximately 300 kilometers (186 miles) south of the Suez Canal, is a significant hub for Egypt’s oil production activities.
