The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has launched a full investigation into the complaints made by a retired police officer who rejected his N2 million retirement benefit in a viral video.
The officer, a retired Superintendent who served in the Nigeria Police for 35 years, said he was shocked when he was informed that his total retirement package was just N3 million. In the video, he said the amount included N1 million arrears from October 2023, when he retired, and N2 million as his final benefit.
The video sparked strong reactions online, with many Nigerians expressing anger over the poor treatment of retired security officers who spent decades serving the country.
Responding to the issue, the Force spokesperson, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said in a statement on Thursday that the IGP had ordered NPF Pensions Limited to urgently review the officer’s case.
“The IGP has ordered a thorough investigation into the allegations raised in a viral video by a retired Superintendent of Police concerning the welfare and retirement benefits of police pensioners,” the statement said.
He explained that the IGP is not ignoring the challenges retired officers face and believes feedback like this is important for fixing problems in the system.
“The Nigeria Police Force is not insensitive to the plight of its pensioners, many of whom dedicated their lives to the service and safety of our nation,” Adejobi added.
Egbetokun assured both current and retired officers, as well as their families, that the Force remains committed to better welfare and a pension system that respects the sacrifices made by its officers.
He also urged everyone to remain calm while NPF Pensions looks into the matter and works with other agencies to find lasting solutions.
