The Ebonyi State Government has closed 283 illegal and substandard primary and secondary schools across the state within the past two years.

The Commissioner for Education, Prof. Paul Nwobasi, made this known on Thursday while speaking with journalists in Abakaliki, the state capital.

Nwobasi explained that the affected schools were scattered across various communities and failed to meet the state’s education standards.

“The sealing of the schools was part of the state government’s efforts to build quality education for the people,” he said.

The commissioner described the operation of illegal schools as a serious issue and advised those responsible to either shut down or come forward to regularise their schools.

“I call on the proprietors of the unapproved private schools to identify with the Ministry of Education to guide them on how to establish standard schools and get approvals,” he added.

Nwobasi also shared that the state government is currently building new classrooms to improve learning conditions.

According to him, 39 classroom blocks are being constructed in secondary schools across the 13 Local Government Areas of the state.

He added that 42 model school buildings with modern and beautiful designs are near completion.

“For primary schools, we are also constructing 36 buildings, two in each of the LGAs,” Nwobasi said.

The government said it will continue to ensure that all children in Ebonyi receive quality education in a safe and well-equipped environment.
