England footballer and Crystal Palace midfielder, Eberechi Eze, has celebrated his Nigerian roots with a traditional Igbo wedding ceremony in Imo.

Eze, who was born in Greenwich, United Kingdom, to parents from Mbaise in Imo State, chose to honour his heritage with a colourful celebration that showcased the customs of his people.

The ceremony took place on Biafra Heroes Day — a significant date for many in the Igbo community — and was filled with cultural displays, traditional music, and joy from friends and family.

The footballer, dressed in the iconic Igbo *Isiagu* outfit, tied the knot traditionally with his longtime partner, Izuthe Mulatto. The couple legally married in the UK on May 27, 2022, but decided to mark their union with a cultural celebration that highlighted Eze’s Nigerian identity.

Eze and Izuthe have been together since their secondary school days and made their relationship public in 2019.

Photos from the ceremony showed guests dressed in traditional white outfits with red caps and beautifully patterned fabrics. Elders of the community also played key roles in the event, blessing the couple and performing cultural rites.

Despite choosing to play for England at the international level, Eze has always shown pride in his Nigerian background. He once trained with the Super Eagles and was approached by former Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) president Amaju Pinnick and coach Gernot Rohr, who tried to convince him to play for Nigeria.

In 2023, Eze made his senior debut for England and went on to feature in UEFA Euro 2024.

The 26-year-old star, who scored the winning goal when Crystal Palace defeated Manchester City in the final at Wembley, was all smiles during his big day.
