For the first time in its 62-year history, the popular British science fiction series Doctor Who will be set in Lagos, Nigeria.

This major step marks a big moment for African fans of the show, as the Doctor will now knowingly land in Africa — something that has never fully happened in the series before.

The episode, titled “The Story & the Engine,” will explore a unique sci-fi plot where the Doctor discovers that a mysterious barber in Lagos has taken his friend Omo and several customers hostage. The barber is using their stories as fuel to power a strange machine known as the Nexus, which allows travel through “story-space.”

To save the day, the Doctor must insert his own story into the machine — using just six words.

This is not the first time the Doctor has appeared in Africa, but earlier visits were brief and mostly unintentional. In 1965’s The Chase, the First Doctor visited a haunted house exhibit that was later revealed to be in Ghana. And in 1975’s The Pyramids of Mars, the Fourth Doctor briefly visited a tomb in Egypt. However, in both cases, the Doctor barely realized he was on the African continent.

In this new episode, the Doctor chooses to land in Lagos. He tells his companion, Belinda, that Lagos is a key communications hub, which can help them navigate the complicated path home. But there’s also a deeper reason.

The Doctor — currently played in a Black body — explains that he enjoys visiting a barbershop in Lagos formerly run by his friend Omo, where he feels comfortable and free to be himself. This moment brings attention to the idea that identity and acceptance matter, even for someone who can travel through time and space.

The show’s decision to focus on Lagos has been praised for showing Africa as more than a background — instead, it’s now central to the story.

Doctor Who’s long-running fans and new viewers in Nigeria will get a rare treat as their bustling city is transformed into a stage for time-travel and adventure.
