Former Senator Shehu Sani has cautioned that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is on course for a sweeping re-election victory in 2027 unless Nigeria’s opposition parties urgently unite to present a common front.
Sani made the remarks while addressing journalists in Abuja, expressing concern over the growing wave of defections to the ruling All Progressives Congress and the continuing fragmentation of opposition political movements.
“There’s no way you can evict a ruling party without a coalition. Only through unity can opposition parties set aside narrow interests for the greater good of democracy,” he said.
He criticised key opposition platforms such as the Peoples Democratic Party, Labour Party, Social Democratic Party, and New Nigeria Peoples Party for their reluctance to come together, warning that contesting the 2027 election in isolation would play directly into the APC’s hands.
“If they head into the election disjointed, APC will likely win by a landslide,” he warned.
Sani also underscored the ideological weaknesses of Nigeria’s political system, noting that party defections and realignments are common because most political platforms are driven by personal ambition rather than principle.
“Parties are just platforms to pursue personal ambitions. Their manifestos are almost identical, and names are the only things that differentiate them,” he stated.
Sani’s comments add to a growing chorus of voices urging the opposition to build a formidable alliance ahead of the next general election cycle.
