The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority has penalised Kenya Airways for violating the rights of three Nigerian passengers, including a woman named Gloria Omisore.

The Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the NCAA, Michael Achimugu, made the announcement on Wednesday night through his official X (formerly Twitter) account.

According to Achimugu, Kenya Airways broke several key rules in its handling of the passengers’ cases. These include failure to provide proper care, not clearly stating travel conditions, ignoring requests from the NCAA, refusing to process refunds and compensation, and losing passengers’ baggage.

“The NCAA has sent a letter of sanction to the operator, Kenya Airways, over the cases of Gloria Omisore and two other passengers,” he said.

He explained that the letter includes both a financial fine and specific actions the airline must take. One of the major requirements is that the airline must pay a compensation of 1,000 special drawing rights (about $1,300) to each of the affected passengers within seven days.

“Failure to comply with the letter will attract stiffer penalties for the airline,” the NCAA warned.

This development follows a viral incident in February 2025, when Gloria Omisore was flown from Lagos to Nairobi by Kenya Airways without a valid France transit visa for her final destination, Manchester.

As a result, Omisore was stranded in Nairobi for 17 hours and then had to wait another 10 hours without proper care, even though she reportedly had a medical condition.

She also claimed that the airline did not respond to her calls for help. The situation drew widespread attention online, forcing the NCAA to step in.

The NCAA said Kenya Airways later released a misleading public statement about the issue, which the agency rejected. Achimugu confirmed that the airline was ordered to correct its statement but has not done so.

The NCAA said it will continue to take strong action against any airline that fails to respect the rights of Nigerian passengers.
