Popular Nigerian singer, Habeeb Okikiola Badmus, also known as Portable, has been arrested by the Kwara State Police Command over allegations of criminal defamation and other related offences.
He was arrested in Abeokuta, Ogun State, on Saturday, April 13, by police officers acting on a petition filed by a man identified as Okunola Saheed, popularly known as Osupa.
This was confirmed in a statement on Sunday, April 14, by the spokesperson of the Kwara State Police Command, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi.
The police said, “Following a petition received from Mr. Okunola Saheed, popularly known as ‘Osupa’, against Mr. Habeeb Okikiola Badmus, also known in the entertainment industry as ‘Portable’, detectives of the Command have taken lawful steps in line with due process to investigate the allegations.”
According to the police, the petition includes serious accusations such as criminal defamation, threat to life, incitement, character assassination, conduct likely to cause a breach of peace, and the use of abusive and insulting words.
SP Ejire-Adeyemi added, “In view of the weight of these allegations and the supporting evidence, the Command secured a valid arrest warrant from a Magistrate Court sitting in Ilorin.”
The police said the arrest was made at about 7:25 p.m. in Abeokuta, and Portable was immediately taken to Ilorin for questioning.
“Upon his arrival, the suspect’s statement was taken in the presence of legal representatives from both parties. He is currently in custody and arrangements are being made to charge him to court without delay,” the police added.
The Kwara State Police Command urged the public to stay calm and avoid spreading false information, assuring that the case will be handled with fairness and transparency.
