The Supreme Court has cancelled the judgment of the Court of Appeal in Abuja which had earlier recognised Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the Labour Party.
On Friday, April 4, 2025, the apex court, through a five-member panel, said the Court of Appeal did not have the right (jurisdiction) to declare Abure as chairman.
The panel explained that leadership matters within political parties are internal issues, and courts are not supposed to interfere.
The court also noted that Julius Abure’s term as chairman had already ended.
An appeal filed by Senator Esther Nenadi Usman and another person was accepted by the Supreme Court, which described it as having merit.
In addition, the Supreme Court dismissed a separate cross-appeal filed by Abure’s faction, calling it unmeritorious.
This latest decision by the Supreme Court has thrown fresh confusion into the leadership crisis within the Labour Party. More details are expected to follow.
