The Premier League has announced that the 2025 summer transfer window will open in two phases, with an early 10-day period in June to allow clubs participating in the FIFA Club World Cup to sign new players.
At a meeting in London on Thursday, club representatives agreed that the transfer window will open on June 1 and close on June 10. The window will then reopen on June 16 and remain open until September 1.
According to the Premier League’s official statement, the early opening is due to an “exceptional registration period” linked to the FIFA Club World Cup. “The window will open early, between Sunday, June 1, and Tuesday, June 10, due to an exceptional registration period relating to the FIFA Club World Cup,” the statement read.
This decision follows FIFA’s approval of an optional early transfer window for clubs taking part in the tournament. Chelsea and Manchester City, the two Premier League teams participating in the competition, will benefit from this arrangement as they prepare for the 32-team event, which will be held in the United States from June 14 to July 13.
Other Premier League clubs will also be able to complete transfers during this period. However, once the window closes on June 10, no further transfers will be allowed until it reopens on June 16.
There had been discussions about closing the transfer window before the new Premier League season kicks off on August 16.
Many sporting directors supported the idea, arguing that squads should be finalized before the season starts. However, shareholders rejected this proposal, stating that it would require coordination with other European leagues.
The Premier League follows FIFA’s rule that limits transfer windows to a maximum of 16 weeks per year—four weeks in January and 12 weeks in the summer. Last year, the summer transfer window ran from June 14 to August 30.
With the new structure, the summer transfer window will now close just four days before the FIFA Club World Cup kicks off at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium, where MLS side Inter Miami will face Egyptian club Al Ahly in the opening match.
