The Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, has announced the cancellation of this year’s Sallah celebrations, including the traditional Durbar, due to security concerns.

In a broadcast on Wednesday, March 27, Bayero expressed regret over the decision but said protecting lives and property remains his top priority.

“Following the people’s mandate bestowed upon us and our commitment to their protection, we find it necessary to withdraw any arrangements made for the Sallah celebrations given the current situation,” he said.

The Emir explained that the decision was made after consultations with religious leaders and other stakeholders, who advised against holding the event due to rising tensions.
“Sallah Durbar is not a do-or-die affair for us. If it risks becoming a source of chaos, loss of lives, or destruction of property, then it is best to shelve it,” he added.

Bayero had earlier written to the police, notifying them of his intention to hold the Durbar, but concerns were raised over potential violence as the 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, was also reportedly planning a similar event.

The situation has heightened tensions in the Kano Emirate, as supporters of both traditional rulers remain divided over the leadership dispute.

Although security agencies have not issued an official statement, there is speculation that authorities are taking precautionary measures to prevent any possible clashes.

The Emir urged Kano residents to accept the decision in the interest of peace and stability while hoping that lasting peace would return to the state and the country.
