The Federal Road Safety Corps has confirmed that two people died and five others were injured in a tanker explosion that happened on Tuesday night at Otedola Bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

In a statement by FRSC spokesperson Olusegun Ogungbemide, a total of 11 people — all male — were involved in the accident. While five sustained injuries, two lost their lives.

The explosion, which caused a huge fire, was linked to a mechanical fault — brake failure — in one of the vehicles. The crash involved 15 vehicles, making the situation worse and leading to heavy traffic in the area.

Emergency responders, including the Fire Service and FRSC rescue teams, quickly arrived at the scene to put out the fire and stop further damage.

FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, expressed sadness over the accident, noting that it could have been avoided. He stressed the need for drivers, especially those handling vehicles carrying dangerous goods, to follow safety rules strictly.

“We urge fleet managers, vehicle owners, and drivers to always prioritize safety. Any driver found breaking road safety laws will face the full weight of the National Road Traffic Regulations,” Mohammed stated.

He also reassured the public of FRSC’s dedication to keeping roads safe and encouraged Nigerians to stay alert and report road emergencies through the FRSC’s toll-free helpline: 122.
