The Niger State Police Command has arrested a 70-year-old man, Alhaji Sabo Manigi, for allegedly killing a police inspector, Musa Nasiru, over a dispute involving his son’s failed marriage proposal.
Manigi, a native of Manigi community in Mashegu Local Government Area, reportedly committed the crime on February 3 after his son’s love interest chose to marry Inspector Nasiru instead.
Eyewitnesses said the young woman’s decision left Manigi’s son devastated, causing him to faint upon learning that she had opted for the policeman.
The suspect later confronted Nasiru, accusing him of causing his son’s distress and allegedly threatening to kill him.
According to a witness, “He told Nasiru that he must kill him. Some of his friends thought he was joking. But then, he brought out a knife and stabbed him.”
Nasiru was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Bida, where he was pronounced dead.
Following the incident, Manigi fled to Bode-Saadu in Kwara State but was tracked down and arrested by operatives of the Niger State Police Command on February 25.
Confirming the arrest, the command’s spokesperson, Wasiu Abiodun, stated that the suspect had confessed to the crime and was currently in police custody at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Minna.
“The suspect will be charged to court as soon as the investigation is concluded,” Abiodun said.
