The Plateau State Ministry of Education has shut down two private schools in Jos for failing to meet the required standards.
Mr Sabastine John, the Director of Quality Assurance in the ministry, confirmed this to newsmen on Monday in Jos.
The affected schools are First Academy, located in Jos North Local Government Area, and Niret Private School in Jos South Local Government Area.
According to John, the schools were closed during the ongoing verification of private schools in the state, aimed at ensuring children receive quality education.
“We observed that the facilities in these schools were still in a deplorable state, and their management had not adhered to the required standards,” he said.
He explained that the learning environment was not conducive for proper teaching and learning, making it necessary for the government to step in.
“There is no conducive environment for quality teaching and learning to take place in these schools, and we cannot allow this to continue,” he added.
John also mentioned that First Academy had been previously shut down two years ago for similar reasons. He expressed disappointment that despite pleading with the state government to reopen, the school had not made any improvements.
“Two years ago, we closed down First Academy due to substandard facilities, but the management of the school pleaded with the state government. Here we are today, and nothing has changed,” he said.
He further stated that the government remains committed to ensuring all schools operate according to the state’s guidelines.
John encouraged the management of the affected schools to apply for reopening once they address the issues raised.
