A suspended traditional ruler in Ogun State, Oba Semiu Adewale Ogunjobi, has been granted bail after being arraigned for assaulting a 73-year-old chief, Abraham Areola.
Ogunjobi, the Olorile of Orile-Ifo, was brought before the court on Tuesday on three charges: conspiracy, assault, and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.
The spokesperson of the Nigeria Police Force, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the development in a statement.
“The Kabiyesi Abdulsemiu Ogunjobi, who assaulted an elderly man in a viral video, in Ifo, Ogun State, has been charged to court today, February 4, 2025, on a three-count charge of conspiracy, assault, and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace,” Adejobi said.
The court granted the suspended monarch bail and adjourned the case to March 6, 2025, for further hearing.
Adejobi assured the public that justice would be served.
“The police will continue to uphold the rule of law and the core values of the noble profession,”* he added.
The incident, which sparked public outrage, was recorded in a viral video showing Ogunjobi verbally and physically attacking Chief Areola.
Following the assault, the Ogun State Government suspended Ogunjobi for six months while investigations continue.
