The Governor of Enugu State, Peter Mbah, has approved a salary increase for 459 customary court judges across the state’s 153 customary courts.

The new pay structure will take effect from January 2025, aligning with the state’s ₦80,000 minimum wage.

This was announced on Monday by the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on New Media, Dr. Reuben Onyishi.

According to Onyishi, the review was prompted by the high cost of living and the national minimum wage increase to ₦70,000. Governor Mbah further raised the minimum wage in Enugu to ₦80,000.

“This also followed a memo dated November 25, 2024, addressed to the Governor by the Special Adviser on Legal Matters, Mr. Osinachi Nnajieze, in response to which Mbah graciously approved the review,” Onyishi stated.

The review applies to the chairpersons and members of the customary courts. Chairpersons’ salaries have been increased from ₦42,989.76 to ₦92,989.76, while the two members of each court will now earn ₦89,736.18, up from ₦39,736.18.
