Vice President Kashim Shettima has publicly apologised for the recent military airstrike in Sokoto State that mistakenly killed civilians, urging local communities to assist the military with information to prevent similar incidents.
The airstrike, carried out on December 25, 2024, targeted the Lakurawa terrorist group in Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa communities in Silame Local Government Area. However, at least 10 villagers lost their lives, and many others were injured during the operation.
In a statement by his Media Assistant, Stanley Nkwocha, Shettima extended deep condolences to the families of the victims and described the event as a rare but tragic outcome of military operations aimed at eliminating terror groups.
“I extend my deepest sympathies to the government and people of Sokoto State, particularly to the families of those who lost their lives. We are dismayed by the civilian casualties and the pain caused during these difficult times,” Shettima said.
He added, “On behalf of our gallant officers, I apologise for this great loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those who perished. May Almighty God grant them the strength to bear this loss.”
Shettima urged residents in terror-affected areas to provide useful intelligence to help the military conduct precise operations. He emphasized that the collaboration between communities and security forces is vital in the fight against terrorism.
“We need your support to ensure accuracy in our operations. Our brave officers are risking their lives to protect the people, and with your assistance, we can achieve a safer Nigeria,” Shettima said.
He assured the public of President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to eradicating terrorism, promising that the government would intensify efforts to create a peaceful environment where citizens can live and work without fear.
On the same day, Shettima led a delegation on a condolence visit to Jigawa State to sympathise with Governor Umar Namadi, who recently lost his mother, Hajiya Mariam Namadi, and his eldest son, Abdulwahab Namadi, within 24 hours.
Accompanied by Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum and other officials, Shettima said, “Death is an inevitable destiny that awaits us all. May Allah grant the governor and his family the fortitude to bear these great losses.”
The vice president reiterated the government’s determination to combat terrorism, promising continued military reforms and support for security agencies.
“Security is everyone’s responsibility. Together, we can make Nigeria peaceful and prosperous for all,” Shettima concluded.
