The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority has sanctioned five airlines, including two international carriers and three domestic operators, for failing to follow its regulations.
These violations include not refunding passengers on time, ignoring NCAA directives, mishandling luggage, and issues with delayed or cancelled flights.
Speaking at the NCAA’s Abuja headquarters on Tuesday, the Authority’s spokesman, Michael Achimugu, said, “Although airlines are not always responsible for flight disruptions, the NCAA regulations require them to take certain actions during such events. Failure to comply leads to sanctions.”
He reminded passengers that the NCAA had earlier warned airlines to pay refunds within 14 days for online ticket purchases and immediately for cash purchases.
“The harmattan season affects visibility and causes flight cancellations, which are not the fault of airlines. However, the sanctions being issued today concern cases where airlines are clearly at fault,” Achimugu explained.
This festive season has seen an increase in complaints about flight disruptions, with many passengers frustrated by cancellations and delays.
Achimugu assured the public that the NCAA is addressing these issues. He added, “We will summon all airline executives this week to discuss flight disruptions and regulatory breaches.”
While Achimugu did not name the airlines sanctioned, sources revealed they include Ethiopian Airways, Royal Air Maroc, Arik Air, Aero Contractors, and Air Peace.
Achimugu also hinted at more actions to come. “The enforcement we are initiating today is just the beginning. The NCAA will continue to protect passengers and ensure airlines comply with all regulations,” he said.
Passengers are encouraged to report issues with airlines, as the NCAA is committed to ensuring fair treatment and adherence to aviation standards.
