The Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Itam, has ordered the deployment of X-Squad operatives to monitor police checkpoints across the state during the festive period.

In a statement on Tuesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, explained that the deployment is to ensure professionalism among officers and to prevent acts of extortion, harassment, or misconduct, particularly towards travelers.

Ikenga stated, “The Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Itam, has directed the deployment of operatives of the X-Squad to monitor checkpoints across the state. This move aims to ensure that police personnel maintain a high level of professionalism while discharging their duties.”

He added that CSP Emeka Chukwuemeka, a former police spokesperson, is leading the X-Squad team to complement the officers already stationed to maintain law and order.

“The team will patrol and ensure that police officers comply with the Force’s standard operational procedures. This is part of the command’s broader efforts to provide security during the Yuletide,” Ikenga said.

The statement emphasized that residents and visitors to Anambra State are entitled to respectful treatment in line with the Inspector-General of Police’s principles. It urged the public to report any erring officers promptly.

“You can call 112 or the Control Room at 07039194332. Alternatively, contact the X-Squad Commander at 08033294280 or the Public Relations Officer at 08039334002,” Ikenga advised.

The deployment is part of broader efforts to ensure public safety and smooth movement during the Christmas and New Year celebrations. The Commissioner of Police assured residents of quick responses to any security concerns.

Residents have welcomed the initiative. Obinna Eze, a trader in Awka, said, “It’s good to see the police taking steps to prevent harassment at checkpoints. It gives us confidence to travel safely during this season.”
