The Nigeria Police Force has refuted a viral claim alleging that the Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, directed citizens to physically assault and throw stones at officers who request to search their phones during stop-and-search operations.

In a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the police described the report as baseless and a deliberate attempt to spread misinformation.

The statement emphasized that the IGP has never issued such a directive. Instead, he has encouraged citizens to report cases of police misconduct through official channels.

“This claim is entirely false and has no basis in reality. The IGP has not issued any such directive encouraging violence against law enforcement officers. Instead, he has called on citizens to report instances of police misconduct through appropriate channels,” the statement read.

The Force reiterated its commitment to accountability and the rule of law, urging the public to avoid resorting to violent actions.

The NPF provided helplines and social media platforms for citizens to report police misconduct, “Helplines, +2347056792065, +2349133333785, +2349133333786, Social Media, PoliceNG on X, ngpolice on Facebook, and #nigeriapoliceforce on Instagram, Email:[email protected], Website: [npf.gov.ng](https://www.npf.gov.ng)

These channels were highlighted as effective tools for addressing grievances and fostering accountability.

The Force appealed to the public to remain cautious and verify news from credible sources to avoid the spread of fake information.

“Members of the public are advised to remain vigilant against misinformation and verify information through credible sources. The Nigeria Police Force remains committed to fostering a cooperative and trustful relationship between the police and the communities they serve,” the statement added.

The NPF reaffirmed its dedication to improving relations between law enforcement and the public, emphasizing the need for mutual respect and collaboration in maintaining peace and security.
