The Super Falcons of Nigeria have been crowned the Women’s National Team of the Year at the 2024 Confederation of African Football Awards.
The award ceremony, held in Marrakech, Morocco, saw the Falcons triumph over Banyana Banyana of South Africa and the Atlas Lionesses of Morocco, who were also shortlisted for the prestigious title.
Receiving the award on behalf of the team, the President of the Nigeria Football Federation, Ibrahim Gusau, dedicated the honor to Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu. He praised her for her unwavering support for women’s football in the country.
The Super Falcons had a memorable year, qualifying for the Olympics for the first time in 16 years. They were one of only two African teams to represent the continent at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Despite their early exit from the Olympics after losing all group-stage matches, the team’s qualification was seen as a major achievement. This came on the heels of their 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup performance, where they reached the round of 16 and delivered some standout results.
In the men’s category, the Elephants of Ivory Coast beat Nigeria’s Super Eagles to win the Men’s National Team of the Year.
