A tragic drunk-driving incident in South Carolina that claimed the life of a newlywed bride has ended with a 25-year prison sentence for the driver, Jamie Lee Komoroski.
The crash occurred in April 2023, killing 34-year-old Samantha Miller, who was still wearing her wedding dress, and injuring three others, including her husband, Aric Hutchinson.
The collision happened in the city of Folly Beach as the couple was being driven back to their accommodation in a golf cart just hours after their wedding ceremony.
Prosecutors revealed that Komoroski, 25, had spent the evening drinking at several bars before driving at 65 mph (104 km/h) in a 25 mph zone. Her car struck the golf cart, which was driven by Mr. Hutchinson’s brother-in-law.
A blood test showed Komoroski’s blood alcohol level was three times the legal limit.
Despite initially refusing a breathalyzer test, she later admitted to charges including felony DUI resulting in death.
During the sentencing at Charleston County Courthouse on Monday, Komoroski expressed remorse, taking full responsibility for the fatal crash.
Aric Hutchinson, who suffered a brain injury and multiple fractures in the crash, also addressed the court. He tearfully recounted his final moments with his wife.
“On the golf cart, she told me she didn’t want the night to end, and I kissed her on the forehead,” he said. “The next thing I remember is waking up in the hospital.”
Mr. Hutchinson, who lost his wife mere hours into their marriage, described the profound impact of the incident on his life and his family.
Komoroski received multiple sentences for her charges, which will run concurrently, totaling 25 years in prison.
Following the sentencing, Mr. Hutchinson acknowledged her remorse but reflected on the irreparable loss caused by her actions.
“I do think she’s sorry,” he said. “However, that doesn’t change the fact that Sam’s not here, my wife’s not here, the family we planned, all of our injuries. So that’ll take some time for sure.”
