The Federal Capital Territory Commissioner of Police, Tunji Disu, has ordered the impounding of vehicles without number plates across Abuja.

This directive is part of efforts to tackle the increasing cases of “one-chance” crimes in the area.

Disu also directed the deployment of additional personnel and equipment for patrols, stop-and-search operations, and surveillance throughout the FCT.

The FCT Police spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, announced this in a statement on Tuesday. She noted that regulations concerning covered number plates and tinted glasses would also be strictly enforced.

“The FCT Police Command is deploying additional personnel and equipment for patrols, stop-and-search operations, and surveillance throughout the Federal Capital Territory. This initiative aims to combat rising incidents of ‘one-chance’ crimes and car theft,” Adeh said.

She further explained that vehicles without registration numbers, with only one plate, or with defaced plates would be impounded.

“While these operations may cause some inconvenience, they reflect our commitment to the safety of all FCT residents and to deterring criminal activities targeting motorists and passengers,” she added.

Adeh revealed that some stolen vehicles had already been recovered, and suspects involved in “one-chance” robberies had been arrested since the measures were introduced.

“We appreciate the public’s patience and cooperation during these operations, and we advise vehicle owners to ensure compliance with all regulations. The FCT Police Command is dedicated to maintaining a secure environment,” Adeh stated.

Residents were encouraged to report suspicious activities and work with police officers to enhance safety in the nation’s capital. “Your safety is our priority,” Adeh assured.
