The Ogun State Police Command is searching for a woman accused of abandoning her baby outside Blessed Clinic in Oru Ijebu, located in the Ijebu North Local Government Area of Ogun State.
Reports indicate the baby was left in front of the clinic at about 6:45 a.m. on Friday. The infant, believed to be less than 40 days old, was discovered by the clinic’s owner, who quickly brought the baby inside for medical care before alerting the police at the Oru Division.
Police spokesperson Omolola Odutola confirmed the incident and said investigations are ongoing to find those responsible. “The medical doctor in charge of the hospital alerted our division about the child. We have initiated an investigation into the matter, and the child is currently receiving treatment at the hospital,” Odutola said.
Cases of child abandonment are not uncommon in Nigeria. In 2022, a baby girl who could neither speak nor walk was left outside a shop on Tajudeen Bello Street, Ogun State. The child, rejected by orphanages, remained in police custody after being rescued by officers from the Agbado Division.
Earlier this year, police arrested a 30-year-old woman, Olubunmi Ajayi, for attempting to drown her five-month-old baby in a river in Sagamu. A passerby, Olusola Sonaya, intervened and saved the child.
Police are appealing for information that may help identify the woman involved in this latest incident. Meanwhile, the abandoned baby continues to receive care at Blessed Clinic.
