Manchester United has appointed Ruben Amorim as its new head coach, replacing Erik ten Hag, who was sacked earlier this week.
The Portuguese coach, previously with Sporting Lisbon, has signed a contract with United until 2027 and will start his role on November 11.
“Manchester United is delighted to announce the appointment of Ruben Amorim as head coach of the men’s first team, subject to work visa requirements,” the club announced on its website. The club added that Amorim’s contract includes an option to extend for another year, pending his completion of commitments with Sporting Lisbon.
Amorim, who led Sporting Lisbon to two Primeira Liga titles, is regarded as “one of the most exciting and highly rated young coaches in European football,” according to United. Until Amorim arrives, former United star Ruud van Nistelrooy will continue to manage the team.
The club decided to part ways with Ten Hag after a 2-1 loss to West Ham, which dropped United to 14th in the Premier League standings with only three wins from nine games.
