The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has warned Nigerians about using Nivea Black & White Invisible Roll-on deodorant, 50ml after it was recalled due to health concerns.
This specific product, advertised for 48-hour protection in African climates, was flagged by the European Union’s Rapid Alert System for Dangerous Non-Food Products in Brussels.
NAFDAC issued an alert on Thursday, highlighting that the affected deodorant carries batch number 93529610.
According to the agency, the product contains 2-(4-tert-Butylbenzyl) propionaldehyde, a chemical banned in cosmetics because it could harm the reproductive system, affect unborn children, and cause skin irritation and burns.
In a statement, NAFDAC explained, “The recalled Nivea product is reported to contain 2-(4-tert-Butylbenzyl) propionaldehyde, a chemical prohibited in cosmetic products due to its potential to cause harm to the reproductive system, impair the health of an unborn child, and cause skin irritation and burns to users.”
The product, which has a barcode number 42299882, was manufactured in Germany. NAFDAC advised those in the supply chain—including importers, distributors, and retailers—to take extra caution to avoid distributing or selling the affected deodorant.
NAFDAC added, “Members of the public in possession of the affected batch should cease sale or use and submit stock to the nearest NAFDAC office.”
Healthcare workers and consumers are also encouraged to report any side effects from the product to the agency by visiting the nearest NAFDAC office, using its E-reporting platform, or downloading the Med-safety app on Android or iOS.
