Former Labour Party Presidential Candidate, Peter Obi, has revealed that he donated over N200 million for education within one week to help build a brighter future for the younger generation.
Obi shared this information during the 70th Anniversary of Queens School Enugu, organized by the Queens School Old Girls Association, on Saturday.
“I was in Onitsha on Monday where they started a new university. From there, I went to Borromeo College of Nursing,” he said. “On Tuesday, I was at Anyigba in Kogi State to attend to students’ needs, and on Thursday, I was in Almajiri School in Kaduna to support their needs as well.”
Obi emphasized the importance of education for a nation’s success, saying, “I have donated over N200 million this week on education.” He noted that investing in education would help reduce crime and build a better future for young people.
The former Governor of Anambra State added, “The future of any country depends on its investment in health and education.”
Obi also expressed concern over the decline of Queens School Enugu, which once produced many accomplished individuals but has lost its former glory due to neglect.
“Those of you who studied in this school will wonder how we got here,” he said. “A school that was once celebrated has now become something far from what it used to be.”
He urged the old students to come together to rebuild the school rather than focus on creating new ones. “Let’s go back and fix our schools,” Obi appealed, pledging to partner with the association to give the school a facelift.
The National President of the association, Mrs. Ifeanyi Egbunike, echoed Obi’s concerns, saying, “Many things have gone wrong with the school. It lacks new structures.”
She praised Obi as a visionary leader and a lover of education, stating, “We chose Obi because he is a man with vision, he is result-oriented, and he loves education.”
Mrs. Maureen Atuonwu, Chairperson of the Enugu Chapter of the association, said the school was established on October 4, 1954, and alumni from all over the world came together to celebrate its 70 years.
“We are partnering with the Enugu State Government to see how we can take this school to greater heights,” Atuonwu said, adding that the school has produced many professionals, including Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.
