Troops from the Multinational Joint Task Force have successfully rescued 40 people held hostage by Boko Haram terrorists in Borno State, Nigeria.

The rescue took place during a clearance operation in the Kukawa Local Government Area and Baga Axis.

MNJTF spokesman, Lieutenant Colonel Olaniyi Osoba, confirmed the news in a statement on Tuesday. He said that the troops, operating under Sector 3 in Monguno, intercepted a group of Boko Haram terrorists who were transporting the hostages.

“The terrorists fled upon encountering the troops, leaving behind the hostages, who were promptly rescued. Among the rescued persons are eight men, eight women, and 24 children,” said Osoba.

He further explained that the terrorists were fleeing from their enclave in Dogon Chikwu, which had become increasingly unsafe due to intense MNJTF military activity.

In addition to rescuing the hostages, the troops also disrupted a key logistics network used by the terrorist group. The MNJTF is continuing to pursue the fleeing terrorists, who may still be holding additional hostages.
