The National Emergency Management Agency has assessed a major bridge connecting Yola to Gombe, which recently collapsed.

The incident has caused major disruptions to transportation and trade between the two states, leaving commuters and goods stranded.

According to a statement from NEMA’s Head of Press Unit, Ezekiel Manzo, the collapse occurred in the Lamurde Local Government Area of Adamawa State. He explained that heavy seasonal rains, combined with structural weaknesses, likely caused the collapse.

“A rapid assessment was immediately initiated by NEMA Director General, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, to evaluate the extent of the damage and recommend necessary mitigation steps,” the statement read.

The assessment team, led by Mr. Musa Yakubu from NEMA’s Yola operations office, worked closely with the Local Emergency Management Committee (LEMC) of Lamurde Local Government Council to inspect the site.

“Initial reports from the assessment indicate that the collapse has severely affected critical infrastructure, creating a major transportation bottleneck and causing significant delays for emergency services. Local residents are advised to avoid the area until further notice, as the site poses serious safety risks,” the statement added.

Speaking on behalf of NEMA, Mr. Musa Yakubu highlighted the urgent need for government intervention to ensure the maintenance of key infrastructure like the bridge. He also urged residents to be patient during the reconstruction process, acknowledging that while it may take time, the result will be a safer and more reliable connection.

“The proper maintenance of vital infrastructure is crucial for the safety and well-being of our communities,” Yakubu said. “We ask everyone to remain patient as work begins to rebuild the bridge.”
