The Imo State House of Assembly has asked the government to take quick action to save Primary Schools 1 and 2 in Umuna, Orlu Local Government Area, from being damaged by floods.

On Tuesday, Ikenna Ihezuo, a lawmaker representing Orlu State Constituency, raised the issue during a session.

Ihezuo explained that the rainy season had brought heavy flooding, which left students and teachers stranded and helpless. “The affected schools are highly vulnerable and susceptible to flooding,” he said, adding that the floods had made teaching and learning difficult.

He expressed concern that the situation could worsen if the government did not act soon. He also mentioned that it was surprising the issue had not been brought to the attention of Governor Hope Uzodinma, who had been working on roads and other public services in the state.

Ihezuo asked the House to urge the governor to instruct the Ministries of Works and Education to take immediate steps to rescue the schools.

Chigozie Nwaneri, the Chief Whip, supported the motion and warned that if nothing was done, the buildings could collapse. “Urgent action is needed before the buildings become compromised due to the flooding,” Nwaneri said.

The Majority Leader, Kanayo Onyemaechi, also supported the motion. He added that while the school structures were still strong, immediate action would prevent further damage. Onyemaechi warned that if the issue was ignored, miscreants might take advantage of the situation and vandalize the buildings.

After hearing from several lawmakers, the Speaker, Chike Olemgbe, agreed with the motion and directed the Clerk, Chinelo Emeghara, to send the Assembly’s resolution to the governor’s office and the relevant ministries.

The Assembly hopes for a quick response to protect the schools from further damage and ensure that students can return to their classrooms soon.
