Flooding: APC UK expresses readiness to assist victims

The All Nigeria Conference of Principals of Public Schools has urged for the proper fumigation of schools being used as Internally Displaced Persons camps in flood-affected states to ensure safe resumption of academic activities.

According to the PUNCH, ANCOPPS President Musa Ibrahim emphasized the need for thorough sanitation in these schools to prevent disease outbreaks, particularly in boarding facilities and classrooms.

“In areas affected by flooding where schools have been converted into shelters for displaced individuals, it is crucial to address sanitation,” Ibrahim said.

“Schools need thorough fumigation… to prevent the spread of communicable diseases.”

The severe flooding in several states, including Borno, Yobe, Jigawa, and Kogi, has delayed school reopening as thousands of people are displaced. Borno State, which has seen massive flooding after a dam overflowed, recently announced a two-week postponement of school resumption. Ibrahim stressed that beyond sanitation, additional steps must be taken to prepare schools for the new term, particularly by equipping classrooms and boarding houses with necessary learning materials.

“For the new academic term, it is essential to focus on proper preparation. Ensure that teaching materials and learning aids are in place to facilitate effective and engaging instruction,” he advised.

Ibrahim shared that his own family home in Maiduguri had been overtaken by the floods, and he had to navigate the waters by canoe to access the property.

He said, “As I speak to you, I’ve just returned from my family house in Maiduguri…the property is completely inundated, and almost everyone has evacuated.”

He called on the government to increase funding for school maintenance in light of rising costs.

Similarly, Dr. Deji Akinola, Director of Topdeal College, Lagos, advised parents to prepare early by purchasing textbooks and ensuring reliable transportation for the upcoming school session, despite the economic challenges many face. He encouraged parents to choose schools within their financial capacity to ensure stability for their children.

Akinola further advised, “Check the school’s requirements for the new session, including uniforms, books, and any special supplies… Buy required textbooks, stationery, and other school supplies well in advance.”
