An oil tanker carrying 45,000 liters of Petroleum Motor Spirit fell sideways at Ojota, under the bridge, heading towards Ketu, Lagos State.
The incident occurred around 3:10 PM, prompting immediate action from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency.
The head of the Public Affairs Unit at LASEMA, Nosa Okunbor, made this known in a statement.
The statement reads “LASEMA received distress calls via the 767/112 Emergency Toll-Free lines and dispatched a response team from their Command and Control Centre at Alausa. The team arrived at the scene at 3:19 PM.”
“Upon arrival, the LASEMA Response Team found the tanker, with registration number KMC125 ZQ, on its side while the truck head remained upright. Investigations revealed that the tanker’s turntable broke while negotiating a bend, causing the tanker to lose control and fall. This completely blocked the road and spilled its contents. Thankfully, no injuries or casualties were reported”
The statement also stated that safety measures were implemented to prevent further incidents. Traffic control measures were activated by the LASEMA Response Team in collaboration with LASTMA to manage the traffic.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service actively blanketed the spilled petroleum to prevent a fire. Responders worked tirelessly to manage the situation and recover the fallen tanker.
The truck head was towed off the road. LRT deployed heavy-duty equipment, including a giant crane named Charlie and a lowbed truck, to complete the recovery operation. The operation was successfully concluded without any secondary incidents.
The road has been reopened to the public, and LRT personnel and equipment have returned to base in good condition.
In attendance were the LASEMA Response Team, LASTMA, the Nigeria Police Force and the Federal Road Safety Corps.
