Governor of Delta State, Sheriff Oborevwori has attributed a noticeable reduction in crime rates in Asaba and its environs to the ban on commercial motorcycles, locally known as Okada.
He made these comments during a meeting with members of the Forum of Female Permanent Secretaries in the state on Tuesday.
Speaking on the impact of the ban, Governor Oborevwori said, “Since the ban on Okada in Asaba and its environs, the crime rate has reduced. Initially, I was reluctant, but today, we thank God for the decision because it is paying off.”
The governor acknowledged the need for alternative transportation solutions in Asaba and Warri, given the public support for the Okada ban.
He expressed plans to address the transportation challenges, particularly for civil servants commuting to work.
During the meeting, Governor Oborevwori expressed satisfaction with the performance of the permanent secretaries and reiterated his commitment to enhancing the working environment for civil servants.
He highlighted ongoing efforts to promote gender balance among permanent secretaries, noting that the state currently boasts parity with 23 male and 17 female permanent secretaries.
Regarding the forum of female permanent secretaries, Dr. (Mrs.) Mininie Oseji, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment and leader of the forum, praised Governor Oborevwori for his inclusive governance and support for projects benefiting the people of Delta State.
She also requested the governor’s consideration for improved training opportunities and infrastructure support for permanent secretaries.
Governor Oborevwori assured continued collaboration and support for civil servants’ welfare, including training and retraining initiatives.
He affirmed his commitment to approving justified requests for educational opportunities and infrastructure improvements within the civil service.
The forum, established in October 2021, serves as a platform for female permanent secretaries to discuss shared concerns and advocate for their professional interests.
Mrs. Oseji commended Governor Oborevwori for his transparent financial management and pledged the forum’s support in achieving the state’s developmental goals.
