Biden criticizes Netanyahu’s handling of Gaza crisis
US President Joe Biden has expressed disagreement with Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s approach to handling the situation in Gaza, calling it a “mistake.”
In an interview aired on Tuesday night, Biden emphasized the need for Gaza to have “total access to all food and medicine” for the next six to eight weeks.
“I think what he’s doing is a mistake. I don’t agree with his approach,” Biden stated during the interview. He further urged Israel to allow unrestricted access for essential supplies into Gaza.
The remarks come amid escalating tensions in the region and ongoing military actions. Last week, Biden warned that US support for the conflict resolution depended on Israel permitting more humanitarian aid into Gaza.
Israel has refuted accusations of obstructing aid entry into Gaza and instead pointed fingers at UN agencies for alleged shortcomings in aid distribution.
The interview, recorded last Wednesday, touched on recent events, including Israeli strikes that resulted in the deaths of seven aid workers from World Central Kitchen. Biden condemned the attacks, describing them as “outrageous.”
Israeli Defense Forces acknowledged “grave mistakes” in targeting the aid workers and dismissed two senior officers following an inquiry.
Biden reiterated his call for a ceasefire, urging Israel to allow unrestricted access for food and medicine into Gaza for the next few weeks. He underscored the importance of Hamas agreeing to a pause in hostilities and releasing remaining hostages.
In response to the pressure, Israel announced plans to open a crossing to northern Gaza and a deep water port to facilitate aid delivery. However, specific details regarding the implementation of these routes are yet to be provided.
As the conflict persists, Biden faces mounting domestic pressure regarding US support for Israel. Despite criticisms of Israel’s actions, military supplies from the US continue to flow to the region unabated.
The conflict in Gaza began when Hamas-led gunmen attacked southern Israeli border communities, resulting in casualties and hostages. Israel maintains that many hostages remain in Gaza, while the Hamas-run health ministry reports a significant number of civilian casualties during Israel’s offensive.
