Superintendent Riwanu Kasumu of the Lagos Police Command and his tactical team has garnered praise from Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun for their refusal to accept a N4 million bribe offered in a case involving drug peddling and unlawful possession of ammunition.
The commendation came after Superintendent Kasumu’s team apprehended Esther Newman Obiekezie, also known as Candy, a 42-year-old suspected drug peddler residing at No 6, Mojirade Street, Ilogbo Lagos, on February 6. Obiekezie was allegedly involved in the sale of drugs known as ICE, and during the operation, the team seized a significant quantity of the substance along with AK47 live ammunition from her possession.
Subsequently, during the course of the investigation, Akete Esther, 43 years old, and Oke Okebalam, 49 years old, from Ajangbadi Lagos, reportedly visited the Ijanikin station to solicit the release of the suspect.
They purportedly offered a N4 million bribe to the police to secure Esther’s release and enable her to continue her illegal activities.
According to a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the police officer in charge seized the cash, marked it as evidence, and apprehended the duo for further investigation and prosecution.
In response to the commendable actions of Superintendent Kasumu and his team, IGP Egbetokun reiterated the commitment of the Force to employ all available means and professional anti-crime strategies to combat various forms of criminality in Nigeria.
“The IGP, therefore, reiterates the commitment of the Force to harnessing all available means and adopting professional anti-crime strategies to tackle all forms of crimes and criminality in Nigeria,” emphasized the statement.
